Today, I took my first three lessons. I was so incredibly nervous before the 1st lesson. I was nervous about wearing the local dress and whether they would think it looked silly on me. I was worried I would be bitten by one of the stray dogs on my way to the classroom. I was concerned I would slip and injure my leg or foot on the wooden planked rickety walkway they had built from the teacher's house to the classroom. But none of that happened. I think I must remember to slow down my speaking a little though. Perhaps I went fast because I was nervous. I felt I was talking very slowly, but to them maybe I was not.
The first lessons were really an introduction and for me to establish their existing knowledge. I was shocked to find that the majority of the monks have only been learning English for around one month. I have been focusing on phonics with the beginners, which is a good place to start. I have been keeping detailed lesson plans in case anyone holds me accountable.
Next: to plan my future lessons...I'm loving this!
